SDGs
Electronics companies make extensive use of cardboard for the packaging of their products to protect them during storage and shipping, but this results in about 90 billion tons of cardboard waste becoming unused every year, just in the USA, about 90 billion tons of cardboard becomes unused waste Dezeen(source).
To improve this situation, Samsung launched the Eco-packaging Concept, a project aimed at reducing such waste by providing customers a way to reuse its TV packaging into new household items. Each Eco-Packaging carton is printed with a special point pattern that removes the packaging feel and can be used to create household objects.
Dezeen x Samsung Out of the Box Competition is a competition aimed at seeking innovative new household objects that can be made using cardboard packaging of the South Korean company’s televisions. Very important that the design allows anyone to build the object independently at home.

GLOBE is designed for Samsung TV “The Serif” and targets a young audience that loves entertainment and technology, loves to dance, sing, and share their experiences. The objects were designed taking into account both the short and long term, to accompany “The Serif” as it integrates with the provided objects.
GLOBE’s immediate goal is to normalize the gestural action of bringing the remote control to the mouth to communicate a command to the Smart TV, stimulating new behavior by imitating a well-known and identifiable action. In this sense, the spherical design of the microphone serves two functions: one purely iconic, emulating the microphone archetype, and one functional, serving as a resonant box for the remote microphone.
Through the remote control microphone, in future developments, it will be possible to integrate, with the implementation of an app, a karaoke function for an even more interactive and fun experience, allowing the user to play with sound effects and voice modifiers. All microphone and support components are designed to interact, maintaining 100% sustainability in product recyclability.

HONDO is designed for the Samsung “The Frame” TV and fits into a classic family setting. The idea of HONDO took shape from the analysis of the TV installation process, which mainly consists of five phases: 1. Package arrival; 2. Unpacking; 3. Installation; 4. Setup; 5. Usage.
Phases 2, 3, and 4 are very delicate but also of great interest to little ones in the family, who can be an obstacle to those responsible for installation. In this scenario, HONDO becomes a tool of distraction and play for the little ones, while the adults focus on delicate installation and TV setup.
The design of the rocking horse was thought to be sturdy and easy to assemble in a few steps, allowing the child to quickly move to the play phase. HONDO’s design aligns with the essential and iconic aesthetic of “The Frame”and the junctions between all components are designed to maintain easy dismantling and 100% sustainable product recyclability.
